The Impact of Stress

Impact of StressEveryday stress impacts your mind, your body, your life!

Dr. Pat Barry has made it her life's work to study the impact of stress on the body. Her unique background provides her with keen insight into the mind-body-health connection.

In today’s world, we all experience an unprecedented amount of stress in our everyday lives. There are now more demands on our time than ever before, and life moves much faster. Our families are often scattered geographically, leaving us with limited support and assistance.

Years ago, people experienced stress mostly as a result of major life events and challenges, like serious illness or the loss of family members. Today, we deal with these major stressors as well as constant and consistent stress from uncertainty at home, work, and the world.

What does that mean for you? Stress is a normal part of life and in small doses, it’s okay. But when it becomes part of your everyday life, it can be a problem. You can actually get physically or emotionally sick when there is no relief from stress.

Your Body Under Stress
When you experience both ongoing daily stress and stressful major life events, your body starts to talk to you. Maybe you catch more colds. Or you throw your back out. Or you suffer frequent migraine headaches. Research shows that if your immune system is under stress, you’re more susceptible to colds or infections. Stress also increases inflammation throughout the body, contributing to cholesterol build-up in the arteries that can lead to heart disease, stroke, and dementia.

Every time you experience stress, your entire body reacts with symptoms like these:

  1. Nerves are activated.
  2. Blood vessels contract.
  3. Your stomach stops digesting.

And these are just a few of the physical reactions. When you live with chronic stress, these physical changes become new patterns that exert additional strain on your body and mind.

Learning how to manage stress differently—and better—can lower your risk of getting sick and help you enjoy life more. That’s what Dr. Pat Barry’s work is all about: helping you manage the stresses in your life so you can stay healthy and happy.
